Every year, WHRO hosts The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee, as the area’s finest middle school spellers compete for the regional title. For the last six years, the Bee has been broadcast live from WHRO’s studio, while the spellers’ family members and teachers watch anxiously from our Teleconference Center. Throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, public schools, independent schools and home school associations all hold local school bees and send their winners to WHRO.
Schools can register to hold a local bee at the Scripps National Spelling Bee website. Among other requirements, students must be in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade to compete.
